The supplies we need to make antique mirror
I intend to explain about the ways of making antique mirror briefly. You need some supplies for making a good quality of antique mirrors as follow:
1- Glass or mirror
2- Acrylic colors
3- Transfer paper using for decorative arts
4- Citristrip and varnish stripping gel
5- Bleach
7- Some sponges
8- Some stencils using in stencil arts
How do we make antique mirror ?
Making antique mirror has some stages we must follow them step by step very carefully to achieve good results. And because we work with mercury which is a poison chemical substance we should completely do our work with safe instructions.
Removing gray paint and mercury
For making antique mirror we can use both mirror and glass in any sizes we need. If we use mirror we must remove the gray color and the mercury from the back of mirror. For removing gray color we can use Citristrip and varnish stripping gel. We pour this gel behind the mirror and remove the gray color with a plastic scraper from the surface of the mirror after some minutes.
Now we must remove and clean mercury. Because mercury is so toxic we must use mask and gloves at this stage. We use a 50/50 solution of water and bleach and spray it on back of mirror. We can let some of the mercury to remain on the surface of mirror. In this way the result is more natural.
Adding color to back of the mirror
When mercury removed now the mirror is ready to work on it. To make antique mirror, we must add our selected acrylic color on the back of the mirror with one sponge. We can dip the sponge in the desired color and hit the back of the mirror with the gentle strokes of the sponge only on some parts irregularly. Also we can spray Acrylic color which has been diluted with water on back of mirror irregularly.
Using transfer paper and stencil
Now we use transfer paper to transfer our selected image on back of mirror. First we need to separate the white paper behind the transfer paper with the help of warm water. Then we transfer the image of transfer paper to the back of mirror. Warm water activates the glue of transfer paper and makes the design stick to the mirror. We can also use stencil for back of mirror in some parts of mirror. So we put stencil on back of mirror and dip the sponge in color and hit the stencil surface with gentle strokes.
Adding mirror effect spray
Now the work is ready and we use mirror effect spray on all back of the mirror and completely cover the back of the mirror with this spray. This stage give the specification of a mirror again to some parts of mirror which have not any color and effects.
Covering the back of mirror
The last stage is covering the back of mirror with gray or black acrylic color. We use one sponge dipped in gray or black color and gently stroke it to back of the mirror and completely cover the back surface. If we use glass instead of mirror, all the stages are the same but we have not the stage of removing gray color and mercury.
